The client's garden backs onto a neighbour's outbuilding which is brightly illuminated internally 24 hrs a day. This was very instrusive especially at night. Charlie Croker designed these decorative screens which as well as partially masking the light makes a feature of it by allowing it to backlight and pass through the cutouts

The screens are set within very large fir trees so a natural rusted finish was chosen to blend in with the red colour of the bark, this will darken with age and varies from almost black in winter when wet to a glowing orange when hit by sunlight.

The location presented numerous problems as the trees are protected so nothing could impinge on the roots or be sunk into the ground.

We designed a non-intrusive load bearing framework that fitted around the existing roots and trunks. Secured with short narrow pins that fitted between the roots without damage. To stabilise any further movement from heavy winds the frames were fixed to the concrete fence to the rear

The screens are laser cut in 3mm mild steel and the design runs across all three screens

The screens are ageing beautifully and have turned a problem into a feature.
